005/365: 40 minute commute in 60 seconds from Eric E. Anderson on Vimeo.
Though SoCal Web designer Eric Anderson shows a creative and somewhat humorous way to cut down the morning commute in the Web video above, the fact is that a virtual rather than physical commute has obvious benefits:- Save on gas and vehicle wear and tear
- Save on child care costs
- Save on other travel-based expenses
Even before the economic downturn encouraged increasing interest in self-employment, a trend towards home based business and working from home has been building.
According to authors Erica Orloff and Kathy Levinson, by 2003 an estimated 60 million people worked from a home office at least one day a week. In their book they write:
In our careers, both of the authors of this book have been commuters on trains, subways, highways and airplanes...What makes us so special? Nothing at all. We work, run a household and raise kids just like everybody else. There is one exception--we do it all from home. We're living our lives--on site.
Orloff and Levinson's "The 60 Second Commute: A Guide to Your 24/7 Home Office Life" is a staple of the home based business community and can be found everywhere online.
