Penguins: Live video and fun facts

Penguins are the stars of two live video feeds in our expanding bird category here at CheckItLive.com, with Webcams revealing the lifestyles of these most beloved aquatic fowl at both the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland and the Dudley Zoo in West Midlands, England. Here are some fun facts about penguins and not so fun information on their plight from the Defenders of Wildlife blog.

• Penguin Suit. No we're not talking about a tux here. In fact, the penguin has a very unique outfit designed to promote its survival. The penguin's two-tone look, called counter-shading, keeps it safe when swimming making it difficult for predators from beneath to pick out its white underside against reflections from the water's surface and difficult for predators from above to detect the difference between the darker back of its body and the color of the ocean in which it swims.
• Twenty Something. With something like 11,654,000 pairs in it's most populous species and between 6,000 and 15,000 individuals in its most endangered, penguins have colonized every continent of the Southern hemisphere from the Galapagos Islands to Antarctica, but the penguin has only a short span to consider the meaning of this significant achievement with a lifespan depending on the species of between 15 and 20 years.
• Water Wings. Despite the perception of Penguins' front appendages as flippers they are in fact true wings though adapted to swimming instead of flight. Some species spend as much as 70 percent of their lives in water where they regularly forage for food.
• Loves Calamari. And for what do these perhaps most famous and recognizable of flightless birds forage in the aquatic world to which they are so perfectly adapted. Squid and shrimp like Krill in the icier polar waters of Antarctica and mostly fish in warmer regions. Unfortunately, climatic change is impacting at least one of those food supplies, the Krill that flourish in colder waters and the penguins themselves are on the menu of much larger predators like sharks, orcas, leopard seals and sea lions.
• Open for Adoption. As the numbers of some penguins like those in the Gallapagos diminish you can help prevent the disappearance of these unique and majestic creatures into the void of extinction. Please do what you can to help.

Live video feed featured from Brazilian rainforest

(A filmmaker with a passion for preservation offers great live video feed from the Brazilian rainforest at CheckItLive.com. Though his background is in communication and advertising, Luciano Breves was inspired to become a documentary filmmaker on a car trip across his native Brazil in 1997 when he witnessed a fire in the rainforest.)

Born in Mogi das Cruzes in São Paulo State, Brazil, Breves has lived in several places in the southern three states of his country and now resides in Morretes City, Parana State, a small city in southern Brazil surrounded by the largest continuously preserved portion of the Atlantic rainforest at the base of a mountain range known as Maciço do Murumbi.

Sharing a vision

The idea for his live video feed came originally from his wife Rose, says Breves, as a way of monitoring the preserved areas of the forest without interference, but 10 years ago when they had first conceived of the idea, the Internet was still too slow to support such a project. The idea of placing a live camera in a remote area of the rainforest also presented what were, at the time, insurmountable technical obstacles. However, last year while watching in amazement as huge numbers of birds flocked to his feeders in an urbanized neighborhood of his hometown, an idea struck him. If he could share the image of this natural beauty with others around the world, he thought, perhaps they would fall in love just as he had and understand the importance of presevation.

Realizing a dream

At first, Breves shared his new Webcam with friends and contacts through MSN, but by the second day the traffic was proving a problem, he says. He soon found a Website that provided a wider audience but the hosting company also placed annoying and sometimes inappropriate ads on his video feed and at the same time he was seeking a way to generate enough revenue to maintain the Webcam long term. Breves found CheckItLive through a friend in the UK who had been referred by a representative of The Prince's Rainforest Project. He says the same day he contacted the company, Mark Welch, CEO of fiNETra, the live video streaming company responsible for CheckItLive reviewed the feed and set things in motion to host it on the site.

A UK Webcam site has turned its focus on birds around the world.
