CheckItLive named Website of the Day

A belated thankyou to Pocket-Lint.com for naming CheckItLive its "Website of the Day" back in June. Thanks guys!

In his post on the topic, Ian Hughes described our little online community thusly:

The worldwide web truly is a window on the world and CheckITLive is a great place to peer through the panes.

We couldn't agree more, Ian. In fact, CEO and founder of CheckItLive Mark Welch says:

the idea of having TV quality live video feeds all in one place came to him one sunny day when he was driving back from a meeting in Polzeath, Cornwall. He thought that the sheer escapism of being able to check what’s happening right now would appeal to a global audience and so far it has just done just that as the comments and emails he receives all praise the site and want more and more cameras.

Of course, CheckItLive is much more than just a window since it encourages community members to share their thoughts on our message blogs and share links to our live video through a variety of social networks and bookmarking sites including Digg, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Yahoo!, Facebook, MySpace, reddit, and LiveJournal.

Interestingly, the folks at Pocket-Lint also picked one of the favorite videos among viewers here at CheckItLive.com when featuring the site, the legendary Minack Theatre on the Cornwall coast. About the feed's more unintentional occasional highpoints, Chris Baxendale, on site engineer for CheckItLive.com explains:

What we didn’t think we would be able to see was Dolphins swimming around in the bay behind the camera and so I have been told a Basking Shark. The camera has been hugely popular with a huge audience of people, not just theatre lovers.

UK Webcam site builds community

UK Webcam site CheckItLive.com not only offers live video feed from around the globe; it also builds community among its growing number of online visitors.

Technical consultant and Web developer David Costello explains:

Many sites secure returning visitors by providing a level of interactivity - so in an effort to make the site more fun and interesting, we're trying to develop a feature-rich community structure which allows users to not only see the cameras but communicate in various ways with the other site users.

An important step in this direction has been the inclusion of a social bookmarking feature allowing visitors to share their favorite video feed on sites like Digg, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Yahoo!, Facebook, MySpace, reddit, and LiveJournal. Costello adds:

Social bookmarking has become such a popular method for finding new and interesting sites, it made sense to add such features to CheckItLive - many websites have succeeded over the years by using Word-Of-Mouth as their main form of advertising.

And there are more features yet to come. According to Costello:

I think the major plan is to complete and open up the user-submitted cameras section, and extend on the existing community features to allow for more user-interactivity with general message boards, expanded camera favourite features, and possibly some form of instant messaging.
